OS "ESPINHOS" DA ÁLGEBRA PARA LACROIX.

Resumo

Resumo: Analisa, numa perspectiva da história cultural, o papel desempenhado pelo livro didático de álgebra de Sylvestre Lacroix (1757-1833) no ensino da Academia Real Militar do Rio de Janeiro. A partir da análise documental de fontes, como jornais da época, Carta Régia de criação da Academia Militar, ofícios, programas e atas, procura indícios sobre o ensino de álgebra ministrado na Academia. No curso matemático, com duração de quatro anos, o ensino de álgebra iniciava no primeiro ano, pelas noções fundamentais e notações até equações do terceiro e quarto grau; em continuidade, no ano seguinte, era abordada a álgebra superior, que compreendia a resolução de equações. Esta pesquisa discute como conceitos polêmicos envolvendo o zero, infinito, números negativos e números imaginários eram abordados no livro didático de Lacroix no ensino de álgebra dessa instituição. Analisa a obra desse autor procurando indícios que justifiquem o fato de tal livro ter sido recomendado por tantos anos na Academia Real Militar. Abstract: This paper analyzes from a cultural history perspective the role of Sylvestre Lacroix’s algebra textbook (1757-1833) in the Royal Military Academy of Rio de Janeiro mathematics teaching. By documentary analysis of sources – such as the Royal Charter which founded the Military Academy, newspaper issues, official letters, programs and minutes of meetings, etc. – clues of the algebra teaching at the Academy were searched for. Throughout the mathematics course, which lasted for four years, the teaching of algebra began in the first year and comprised from the fundamental notions and notations up to equations of the third and fourth degrees, followed, the next year, by the teaching of higher algebra equation solving. This research considers the way controversial concepts – such as the one of zero, infinite, negative numbers and imaginary numbers – were addressed in the Lacroix’s textbook adopted by this institution. It analyzes this author’s work by looking for characteristics which endorsed its recommendation for such a long period in the royal Military Academy.
