A EVOLUÇÃO DOS CUIDADOS DE SAÚDE: DOS CUIDADOS ARCAICOS AOS CUIDADOS ALTAMENTE CIENTÍFICOS

Por vezes, é a realidade da doença que desperta a consciência de que somos seres de cuidado e de cuidar. Neste sentido, também quando procuramos a história dos cuidados de saúde facilmente chegámos à conclusão que eles se encontram intimamente ligados à génese do próprio Homem. É perante a consciência da morte e do adoecer, que o Homem descobre a necessidade do cuidado. A consciência da fragilidade da vida faz realçar no humano a necessidade de cuidá-la, a importância de “tomar conta” da vida, de modo a garantir a sua permanência por um período maior de tempo e, por isso, o Homem começa a cuidar dos mais fracos, dos doentes, dos feridos, de si próprio, revelando o humano essencialmente como um ser que cuida e é cuidado , sendo esta talvez a característica mais distinta da humanidade. Assim, podemos encontrar o cuidar como a “arte que precede todas as outras”1. Mas, se esta versão de cuidado “original” se baseia em práticas arcaicas, muitas vezes instintivas ou mais ou menos empíricas, atualmente os cuidados de saúde são altamente científicos e tecnológicos. Assim, desde as conceções mágico- religiosas que apontavam as doenças como resultantes dos maus espíritos ou das iras de Deus contra os pecados humanos, até aos modelos biomédicos atuais, foi um longo caminho percorrido. Neste sentido, procuraremos analisar a evolução dos cuidados de saúde a partir das seguintes etapas: Do cuidar arcaico ao modelo helenista e do humanismo helénico ao tecnicismo moderno.

There are few things nowadays as capable of bringing Humanity into the realm of existential reflection as the moment when we are faced with the need for Healthcare. Sometimes, it is the reality of a disease that awakens the awareness that we are creatures of care and caring. when we look at the History of Healthcare we easily conclude that it is closely linked to the genesis of Humanity itself. It is faced with the consciousness of death and sickness that Humanity discovers the need for care. The awareness of life’s fragility rouses a person to care for it; to realise the importance of ‘take care’ of life, in order to guarantee its permanence for a longer period. Therefore, Humanity begins to care for the weakest, the sick, the wounded, and for itself, revealing the human being essentially as a creature who cares for and is cared for: perhaps the most distinctive feature of humanity. It is in this sense that we can see caring as the "art that precedes all others, without which it would not be possible to exist"2. If this original care is based on archaic practices, instinctive or empirical, nowadays we live in a time of highly scientific and technological Healthcare. Thus, it has been a long way from the magical-religious conceptions that interpreted illness as the result of evil spirits or God’s wrath against human sins, to the biomedical models of today. In this sense, we will analyze the evolution of Healthcare from the archaic Healthcare to the modern technicality.
