A elderliness genealogy

Abstract: This essay intends to problematize one of the forms elderliness has assumed based on a flexible subjectivity whose formatting instance of truth is the market in a period described by Gilles Deleuze as the society of control. In this context it is noteworthy the concept of active elderliness which orients the conducts both of individual and of the groups aiming the government of oneself without discerning if they are youngsters or elders. This subjectivity is based on a subjectivation related to the consumption of health, leisure, exercises, rejuvenations aesthetics etc which feeds a highly lucrative business. This research is interested in analyzing the problem of the elderliness potency and it insists on the questioning about the emergence of singular and resistant existences. Hence, this article proposes a genealogy of elderliness establishing distinctions and descontinualities of the possible forms of getting old and of the subjectivity of the elders between the Hellenistic and Roman periods (centuries I and II), the Modern and the contemporary eras. As a result, we suggest the political implications of the distinctive forms of subjectivity.

Keywords: elderliness, body, subjectivity, society of control.
