Abstract

During the last decades, we have witnessed to a critical reading of the studies about Americas, considered in a “vertical” interpretation, which means not only as a continental continuum, but also as a geo-political space of significant differences. As a consequence, we observe also a profound review of those hegemonic concepts that appointed the United States as a place producing discourses and South America as an antagonistic place, consumer or repeater. Monteiro Lobato, which was defined by Oswald de Andrade as the “Gandhi of Modernism”, presents a modern and hybrid cultural proposal, which illuminates the innovative pioneer spirit of the creator of Emilia.
