Objectives: The study aimed to evaluate the risk factors related to non-elective removal of Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (PICC) in newborns. Methods: Cross-sectional study, carried out with 188 PICC installed in neonates in a Neonatal Center of a large public hospital, located in the city of São Paulo, between January and November of 2017. For continuous variables, descriptive statistics, and the Student’s t-test were used; and for descriptive variables, the Pearson’s χ2 test. Results: Rupture (25%) and catheter-related infection (19%) were the main reasons for non-elective removal of the catheter and the risk factors identified were related to the type of therapy instituted (mono- or polytherapy), number of venopunctures during insertion, number of dressings performed during their permanence and total permanence time of the catheter. Conclusion: Catheter removal prior to completion of scheduled therapy causes damage to the neonate and extra costs for the institution. The analysis of the reasons for its non-elective removal and associated risk factors demonstrate the need to invest in the training of the nursing team for their correct handling aiming to prevent avoidable complications.Downloads
