Missing Qld diver was on trip with mates

"Margo Monte" (2020-06-15)

The search for an experienced spear fisherman missing for two days off the coast of Queensland will resume at first light on Tuesday.

The 38-year-old man from Bundaberg failed to surface after taking a final dive on Saturday morning, 14 nautical miles off Elliott Heads.

His two mates remained in the boat, with one of them calling for help.

One helicopter and several search crews from Bundaberg and Hervey Bay covered an area of 350 nautical miles on Monday, with no sign of the missing man, according to Senior Constable Mark Gardiner.

"From all the information we have received he has done this trip a few times," Snr Const Gardiner said.

"As the days progress we will have our search assets spreading further out."

The trio were returning to shore after their trip, when it is understood the man asked to have one last dive.

The man has been described as a competent diver and spear fisherman.

Rescue divers searched his last known location, but found no sign of him.

Shallow-water blackout, which occurs when a diver does not have enough oxygen for a dive, is one possible reason police have given for his disappearance.
