A P-plater who 'just wanted a Big Mac' has been slapped with a $838 fine during a McDonald's run after police noticed the unregistered car was missing a bumper bar.

The 22-year-old motorist drove the dark-coloured Honda through drive thru at a Tarneit McDonald's restaurant, west of Melbourne, at 3am.

But the provisional driver was stopped by police who noticed the car had no rear bumper bar.
