Abstract

This article explores the processes of constructing identity and alterity in contemporary political discourse. In order to do that, I examine the case of Brazil, seeking to understand how the figure of “Brazilian people” was respectively developed and shaped by the populist far-right and the broad front led by Lula, who won the elections in October 2022. The results show that while far-right populism portrays the people as an indistinct mass of identical units, excluding others who mark their differences, the left-wing progressive discourse presents it as a network of alterities grounded on pluralism and participation.
