The need to be constantly updated on current events in contemporary society has, among others, two reasons overlooked by analysts : fear and boredom, two passive states of mind proceeding from the need to defend oneself either against unexpected threats from the outside world or against the inertia of too much free time. They are contrasted with an active interest in current affairs consisting of the interest in obtaining information and news to carry out projects regarding one’s permanent life interest (seeking information useful for one’s action in a field in which one is passionate or culturally or professionally interested), or for the ethical choice of commitment towards civil, political or social problems that affect all citizens and in the face of which, due to their gravity and the importance we attribute to them, we feel the need to engage all our abilities.
