The present article reproduces (except a few details) the preface of an anthology of J.-M. Floch’s works to be soon published in Lithuania. While it outlines a biography in broad strokes, it endeavours above all to introduce, explain and synthesise some of the operative concepts he developed during his all too short career, which was essentially devoted to research into visual semiotics. Most of these concepts are now firmly established and definitively integrated into the methodological and theoretical corpus acquired in general semiotics. The commented essays, which mostly deal with everyday objects, were chosen on the basis of their complementarity with regard to the notions of deep figurativity, plastic semiotics, semi-symbolism, iconicity, bricolage, axiology and aesthetics.
