La sémiotique en prise sur le singulier

According to the structuralist approach, what are the relations between a given singular work and the general system it stems from ? If this approach described the system of all real or possible (and thereby predictable) phenomena, any particular occurrence (a text, a discourse, a film, an event) would appear as the simple realisation of a schema, a model or a structure known in advance and no “creation” would then be conceivable. But among structuralist undertakings, Greimas’s semiotics is an exception. It stands out in reason of a series of epistemological and methodological options (generative grammar of discourse, description of the system in sintactic and paradigmatic terms, discoursive and not taxinomic semantics) which make it perfectly capable of grasping and accounting for the singularity of a work — as long as it is used in an inventive and non dogmatic way. Concrete analyses have shown that the novelty and the inventiveness of a discourse are best grasped at the level of discoursive semantics considered in relation with the narrative structure.
