Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to discuss the role of advertising in the ideological assimilation and transformation of identity policies, known under the aegis of multiculturalism, within the sphere of consumption society. An analysis of the theme is proposed, locating it in the tension between individual and society; for this reason, it is based on Lacanian-oriented psychoanalysis and on the critical theory of society. Multiculturalism is understood as a symptom of postmodern
and neoliberal policies that fragment the consumption society and multiply massified targets whose adhesion is promoted by advertising, in the name of differences. The conclusion is that the multicultural logic, in the consumption society, comprises a totalitarianism of choices, considering that it is based on the assumption that all choices are given or are possible inside the system itself. In this context, a really subversive choice would be that which breaks the identity policy.
