This essay discusses the rise of Chega, the main representative of radical right-wing populism in the Portuguese political landscape. For several decades, Portuguese democracy was distinguished by the absence of a radical right-wing party with parliamentary representation—a phenomenon often attributed to the indelible collective memory of the Estado Novo and to antifascism as a foundational pillar of the regime. However, this scenario has been changing significantly, with Chega winning an increasing number of votes and seats. The present study argues that this rise is a multifaceted phenomenon, resulting from a complex intersection of socioeconomic, cultural, and political factors. Looking at the evolution of the far right since April 25, 1974, the article examines the emergence and consolidation of right-wing radicalism in Portugal, exploring the ideological meaning of the Chega party and its worldview.
