Os imigrantes no DEOPS-SP: o caso dos portugueses

Abstract

The Object of this article shows that the process of modernization of the city of São Paulo, designed by the economic elites, is going to collide with something that was seen as a problem: the por population, composed of national and immigrants. The project targeted a city “civilized and orderly”, and the poor population represented the opposite, it was seen as “immoral, dirty and dangerous.” To maintain this portion of society under control, the state will take various providences, among them, the creation of a police more equipped and repressive. At this moment it is created the delegacy of political and social order, which had for main function, the repression of any manifestation that endangered public order. The foreigners, seen as the developers of subsersive ideas, will be the delegacy´s main target. Among the foreigners punished by the DEOPS, there is a parcel of portugueses who participated of various activities and organizations seen as “subversive”. The portugueses are my object of research, who are being anlyzed during my masters.
