Intervention in European Portuguese children with phonological delay

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of two phonological intervention approaches (Parents and Children Together (Bowen, 2009) and Phonological Awareness Therapy (Gillon & McNeill, 2007)) in a group of 6 children, aged 5;0-6;1, with phonological delay. The following outcome measures were taken before and after 10 therapy sessions: percentage of consonants correct score, percentages of phonological processes, phonetic inventory, phonological awareness and generalization. These measures were used to analyse the effect of each intervention. Both approaches were effective in improving the childrens’ speech and syllable awareness. Additionally, the children who received phonological awareness therapy made more gains in their phoneme awareness ability.
