The perfeito anterior: apogee and decadence

In this paper, under the assumptions of Historical Linguistics and Functionalism, we deal with perfeito anterior, composed of haver/ter plus participle, whose aliveness was constrained to archaic Portuguese unlike occurred with other structures of haver/ter plus participle that were established as compound tenses. Our data are representative of the 13 th to 15 th centuries from Corpus Informatizado do Português Medieval. We found 327 occurrences: 281 with haver and 46 with ter , which were analyzed according morphosyntactic-semantic parameters, namely: (i) argument selection coupled to the type of argument whose results indicate the prominence of a pronominal argument in relation to the others, such as material or inalienable possession and lack of argument; (ii) type of combination between haver/ter and participle, a parameter that showed match with participles that do not contradict the notion of original possession of haver/ter ; (iii) marks of participle agreement, minimizing the grammaticalization’s effect (use of neutral participle). We also observed that the frequency of haver/ter plus participle decreased from the 13 th to the 15 th century. At the same time, ter , a recurrent auxiliary verb in compound tenses nowadays, is seldom used in the corpus . In this way, the previous perfeito anterior was not consolidated in the system, but had its apotheotic time.
