The cerebral vascular accident is a major cause of disability among adults and can result in sequels, such as aphasia, that brings impacts on the relationship between patients and their families. Few studies focused on caregivers/families. Objective: to investigate aspects of language from the perspective of the caregivers/families, and the impact of aphasia on the communication between them. Method: The data were collected through clinical records and focus group with the caregivers/family members. We used key questions related to the care process, and to the impact of aphasia on the relationship between the aphasiacs and their caregivers/families. Results: Most caregivers are females from 17 to 75 years old. Because of the language disorders, some individuals avoid situations of communication. Consequently, the dialogue with their caregivers/families becomes more restricted. The language disorders, regardless of the type of aphasia, affect the communication with the family as well as the caregivers’ routines. We also observed that the aphasiacs and their caregiver/families have established their own means of communication. In some cases, they use Augmentative and Alternative Communication (CAA) as an important instrument for promoting language and communication. Conclusions: The results endorse that aphasia causes some difficulties of language for the individual himself, as well brings impact on the relations of communication between him and his family/caregiver, which confirms the importance of Speech and Language Pathology assistance. The care to caregiver of adults with aphasia is a field that deserves greater attention from the Speech-Language and Hearing Sciences.Downloads
