Abstract

The purpose of this article is to show the existence of a fixed pattern of functioning in dysphonia and from that, propose a broader speech therapeutic view in the process of evaluation and therapy of patients who have vocal disorders. This view brings up the pattern of functioning generated in the dynamics of body, breathing and voice. Godelieve Denys-Struyf (G.D.S.) method is the conceptual theory that permits us to do this more integrated evaluation. The contribuition of this view was done by analisys of clinical cases. The selection of them was based on the clear identification of a fixed pattern of functioning associated to the vocal disorders. The understanding of voice use, either inside or outside the vocal disorders, was enriched by the knowledge of G.D.S. method and its concept of health as an expression of free movements. The notion of voice is considered as a gesture and the vocal expression as a pattern that, when healthy, results from the free relationship between the person’s body language, breathing, emotions and voice.
