Abstract

Accounting for sleep as having an important role in the orientation for dysphonic patients, we chose the relation between sleep and voice as the issue for our study. For that purpose, we have raised some characteristics of quantity and quality of sleep and we have noticed a probable relation between sleep and voice. Thus, the objective of this study was to investigate the perception of the relation between sleep and voice on dysphonic and non dysphonic adults, through a questionnaire. Two hundred adults of both gender, ranging from 20 to 60 years old took part in this study, 100 of them presenting no symptoms, signals or complaints about alteration in the voice, and other 100 adults with complaints/symptoms and/or some signal of vocal alteration. The results indicated that both groups did not show any complaints about insomnia, but they noticed their voices different after waking up. The dysphonic women (52.6%) noticed alterations on their voices rather than the non dysphonic ones (31.7%), and 53% of the dysphonic adults and 31% of the non dysphonic ones also noticed some alteration in their voice after a bad night of sleep. It can be inferred that women have a better perception of the relation sleep/voice than men, as well as dysphonic women compared with the non dysphonic ones, even when a good quality of sleep on both groups is observed.
