Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to show how important it is to consider intra-disciplinary features – a discipline and its characteristics – and inter-disciplinary features – the relationship among this discipline and others. We analyzed, both rhetorically (GIL, 2011) and linguistically (HYLAND, 1998, 2004, 2002, 2012), 24 abstracts taken from two Linguistics journals. The results show that in the context, Linguistics interacted closely with Biological disciplines, which add their scientific beliefs in their practices and influence on rhetoric and modalization – the use of hedges and boosters – in the published abstracts.
