Sociolinguistic profile of the deafs in low demography regions in the state of Tocantins

Abstract

Research in Sociolinguistics of deafs communities is still scarce in Brazil, mainly in relation to the effective use of the Brazilian Sign Language – Libras, in contact with the Portuguese language. Based on this finding, this research aims to describe the sociolinguistic profile of deaf people resulting from communication and contact with the Brazilian Sign Language and the Portuguese language. The corpus is made up of interviews conducted via WhatsApp with 30 deaf people living in low-demographic regions of the State of Tocantins. Partial results reveal that, in addition to Libras and the Portuguese language, respondents employ additional communication strategies, such as homemade sign language and other forms of communication.

Professor do Adjunto da Universidade Federal de Tocantins, responsável pelas disciplinas de Língua Brasileira de Sinais. Atua no campo da educação de surdos, sociolinguísta e linguísticas aplicada nos curso de Pedagogia, Serviço Social e Educação Física.
