Abstract

Machado de Assis was a reader of Shakespeare's plays, and references to this reading are present in his dramatic and literary criticism. Machado de Assis’s comprehension of the English playwright’s plays assumed a new impetus from the Shakespearean performances promoted by Italian companies that arrived in Brazil from 1871 on. We believe that Machado de Assis has found many things that he needed to make his criticism and his writing in Shakespeare’s plays. From the reading, Machado has become a dramatic critic and a successful writer.
