Abstract

Iconic author that helped to create the Tropicália movement, Torquato Neto repeatedly appealed to the mythical vampire, and other terrifying creatures, in order to compose his poète maudit’s aura. These scary images were commonly increased for the anxious atmosphere that characterized the Brazilian military dictatorship, a historical context that amplified the fear of existence experienced by Torquato Neto in a radically way, as man and as artist. This work makes a study the mythical vampire and other beastly creatures depicted in some of his poems, basing principally on the Gilbert Durand’s systematization of the terrifying imaginary.
