Abstract

This work investigates the theme of ‘time’ in the poetry of João Cabral de Melo Neto and Gastão Cruz. A moeda do tempo e outros poemas, by Gastão Cruz, and some poems taken from Serial and Museu de tudo, by João Cabral, have been chosen. The comparative study of the literature of both poets provides us a comprehension of the importance of time and memory in their work. The ‘time’ studied in their poems is the time of mankind, the pulse of the existence in each verse, each word, each instant. The verses bring us pieces of life that wobble between past, present and future. The task of the reader is to experience the time and the ethics of these poets whose writing is committed to the aesthetic demand of poetry, without forgetting the soul.
