Abstract

The essay discusses the novel O Presidente Negro (1926), by Monteiro Lobato, through the category "utopia". It intends to discuss how Lobato’s novel deals with the utopian paradigm in its fictional transfiguration of the largely influential hygienist thought. Propositions by Chris Ferns, about the utopian narrative, by Hannah Arendt, about the relations between the poetic creation and the political thought, and by Sigmund Freud, about the happiness of quietness, are relevant to the essay.
