Modesto Carone and the uncanny

Abstract

This article presents a study of the short story “Point of view” by Modesto Carone and seeks to identify elements that formally and thematically demonstrate the recurrence of the uncanny. Within this perspective, three theoretical frameworks were used. The first framework is supported by the concepts of montage and fragmentation, according to studies undertaken by Sergei Eisenstein. The second theoretical framework relates to the narrator's position in Carone's stories. The third framework is based on Carone's own critical essay, with a more in-depth focus on the concepts of metaphor and montage. In another context, it brings together Modesto's and Kafka's work. Modesto's close contact with the prose of the Czech writer echoed in his own work: the narrative focus, the unusual, the absurd, and the formal language are manifestations that, to some extent, mirror this experience.
