ANÁLISE DE UM PERCURSO DE RESSEMIOTIZAÇÃO E TRANSMIDIAÇÃO DE UM RELATO DE INTERPRETAÇÃO NO MUD VALINOR

Abstract

The strong presence of multimodality in the digital literacies creates, for the analyst, the challenge of interpreting a network of meanings produced by intersemiotic maneuvering and transmediations that characterize the production of texts in the digital culture. A participatory and collaborative mindset characterizes this culture, which is translated into the figure of the produsers (a content consumer and generator). It adds complexity and scale to the processes of resemantization and transmediation, and it enhances more and more the ability of these producers and consumers to expand, distort, or even delimit interpretive possibilities of texts over which they intervene to create their own modified texts. Therefore, there’s a need for a deeper understanding on how these hybrid objects work semiotically. In this paper, I present a brief analysis on the path of resemantization and transmediation of a digital object by users of a MUD, that is, an on-line multi-user textual RPG game, in this case, based on the universe of J. R. R. Tolkien’s literature. We start from an account of interpretation, i.e., a hybrid text partly produced by the game’s software and partly produced by the MUD player; from such an account, the produsers created a narrative in audio (audio log). In this process, they triggered specific semiotic resources, such as rhythm and speech intonation, and sound design, which interfere with the meanings of the source text. Our analysis aims to show that in the process of transmediation and resemantization this hybrid object presented gains and losses of interpretive possibilities that, somehow, conflict with the context from which the source text was taken, besides showing the usual interpretive practice of the MUD player, which is part of a specific literacy.
