Abstract

Rhotic or “R-like” sounds that comprise in Brazilian Portuguese the production of tap/flap, trill, approximant and fricative consonants constitute a class of sounds which have different manners of articulation. The purpose of this research was to investigate and characterize through acoustic data the production of the variants of “Rlike” sounds in syllable coda position found in speech samples of subjects born in different regions in Brazil. Six words containing rhotic sounds were analyzed regarding acoustic phonetic characteristics. The results showed the production of fricative variants, tap and approximant consonants. Such productions were consistent in characterizing the speakers according to their regions and cities.
