Abstract

In this article, we aim at describing and analyzing some of the works by the Swiss-Brazilian artist Walter Smetak. We have selected three of his sound sculptures: Chori Sol e Lua, Ronda, and Piston Cretino. Based on theoretical concepts emerging from the work of Bakhtin and his Circle, we investigate how form, material and title are associated verbal-visually in the configuration of meaning in those works. We also point to the importance of the sound produced by these instruments for the understanding of their architectonic form, resulting from the relations between their distinct structural and ideological elements.
