Abstract

The objective of the present paper is to show through a linguistic analysis that Women’s Magazines constitute a powerful vehicle to convey ideology and to take part in the construction of women’s identities. To reach this purpose I analyse an article from Nova following Critical Discourse Analysis perspectives. The analysis is based on the tridimensional-framework for text analysis proposed by Fairclough (1989 and 1992) which explores not only the text but the discursive and social practice involved in the discursive event. Besides showing how magazines reinforce stereotypes of gender, the analysis aims at contributing to the debate of women and men roles in society, and to people’s awareness of the power of language in constructing social relations and positions.
