Resumen

This study describes the rhetoric organization of 60 abstracts, 30 in English and 30 in Portuguese, collected form journals in Chemistry, Economics, and Linguistics. The analysis indicated the need of an extension to the schematic description of abstracts proposed by Bittencourt (1996). Some variation was found regarding the frequency with which different moves were employed in each field. In Linguistics and Economics, writers tend to emphasize the presentation of the research by showing the relevance of the study, while in Chemistry, the methodology and results sections seem of greater relevance, presupposing shared knowledge with the readership. Such differences suggest that, when producing abstracts, writers consider not only formal conventions, but also disciplinary idiosyncrasies.
