Analyzing music in the city: a methodological essay in the Catete and Glória neighborhoods, Rio de Janeiro

This article aims at constructing and applying a methodology that allows the understanding and analysis of these musical practices in both their material and immaterial facets. Two methods, soundwalk and urban ethnography, are applied in conjunction and utilize three instruments – a field sheet, sound recording, and cartography – to describe musical practices in relation to the space they occupy. The focus is on analyzing the relationships and patterns that arise precisely from the situation of music in urban space, described through the typification of musical practices found in the Cultural Environment Protection Area of the Glória and Catete neighborhoods in Rio de Janeiro.
