Government sends text message to Australians about coronavirus

The government will send millions of text messages to Australian phone numbers across the country in a bid to slow the spread of coronavirus.

'To stop the spread, stay 1.5 metres from others, follow rules on social gatherings, wash hands, stay home if sick,' the text reads. 

The text message also links to the Australian Government website where there is further information about the virus.

'The Australian Government has begun sending text messages to keep you informed about the national response to COVID-19,' the website says.

'Please act on that advice, it will help save lives.'

The website also details further measures to be introduced from midnight.  

'Tighter restrictions on weddings, funerals, fitness classes, beauty salons, arcades, play centres and more from 11:59pm.'

'Pubs, licensed clubs and hotels (excluding accommodation), places of worship, gyms, indoor sporting venues, cinemas, casinos must close. Takeaway only at restaurants and cafes.

Coronavirus infections in Australia rose to 2,317 on Wednesday morning
