Samsung Pay's best feature no longer beats Google Pay. Here's why I made the switch

"Elida Using" (2020-07-14)

It opens with an elite team of asskickers recruited by the CIA to sneak into a foreign militia compound -- you know the drill: They do that thing where they crab-walk along walls with their assault rifles jammed up against their faces and then kind of whip around corners. Theron is in Fury Road mode for The Old Guard, release date July 10. They shoot a guy and then lower his body to the ground while frowning into the darkness. Yes, The Old Guard is assembled out of the moldiest old action and spy movie cliches.

On a visit to South Korea in 2016, I got to experience Samsung Pay's then-expanding bag of tricks firsthand, before they came to the US. Because of MST support in addition to NFC, I saw Samsung Pay as the frontrunner of mobile payments compared with Google and Apple. And last year, when I forgot my purse at home and spent the day using Samsung Pay as my wallet, I was starry-eyed and grateful. It seemed to develop faster and do more.

As long as the Galaxy S20 Plus I've been using is unlocked (see below), it works everywhere that NFC payments are accepted. Back in London, I complained about my Underground experience to a friend, who reminded me that Google Pay skips the second authentication step, a detail I had forgotten about. As soon as I started regularly using Google Pay, my anxieties disappeared. That was reason enough for me.

Notable site features: Coastal has a philanthropic partnership with the Essilor Vision Foundation to improve the sight of people who can't afford glasses. Coastal says that "for every pair of glasses bought, we will donate a pair of glasses to someone in need."

It's also worth noting that like Coastal (see below), with every pair of glasses you buy, you can opt to have EyeBuyDirect donate a pair to a person in need somewhere in the world -- you pick where. EyeBuyDirect says it's the only site offering such fast delivery. Notable site features: For an extra $29, you can get two-day delivery with single-vision lenses (many frames are available for two-day delivery).

You'll need to know your prescription and pupillary distance from your optometrist before you use an online glasses retailer -- so make sure you get a hard copy the next time you get your vision checked by an eye doctor. That means the first time you buy glasses can be when you get the best deal, so it can pay to try several online retailers before buying glasses online.

Some sites are experiencing shipping delays due to the coronavirus.

Once you have that, most of these sites will let you upload a picture of the prescription from your phone the first time you buy something.

Most of the sites highlighted here offer some sort of discount for first-time customers.

See how to buy glasses online and save hundreds of dollars for more tips.

The lenses are good and these guys offer nice deals on upgrades to photochromic lenses. In the last couple of years, Zenni has been subtly shifting its image, bringing in celebrities like Rashida Jones and 49ers tight-end George Kittle to give the brand a little more of a hipper vibe.

"What's more," the site says, "they have extensive training on the best sports frame and lens options on the planet."

Notable site features: SportRx says that instead of speaking (or live-chatting) to a run-of-the-mill customer service staffer hidden in some obscure call center, you're speaking with a "friendly SportRx Optician in sunny San Diego" who's gone through a rigorous training regimen (the SportRx Academy) and is well-versed in various aspects of optics: refractive light, myopia, presbyopia, astigmatism and everything else you can think of.For a visitor like me based outside the city, using tap-to-pay is more convenient than setting up a transit card, and I never have to worry about accumulating leftover value I don't spend.

The straw that broke this camel's back
For several years, the London Underground has let you tap your phone at the turnstile to buy a one-way ticket.

Warby also has physical optical stores in some locations around the country if you want to go in and try frames that way (alas, they're closed during the coronavirus epidemic). Some of these locations also offer eye tests -- and that prescription can be used at Warby or elsewhere.

Not everybody qualifies to take the online eye exam -- you have to answer some questions to see if you qualify -- but if you do, Lensabl says, "All you need is your computer, smartphone and about 15 minutes of time." Your results will be reviewed by an eye doctor or optometrist licensed in your state who will then issue you a new prescription via email. Notable site features: For $40, you can renew your prescription online.

The big benefit of this technology as running earphones is that, thanks to its open design, you can hear ambient noise and what's going on around you while listening to music or having a phone conversation through the wireless headphones. Also, some race coordinators don't allow runners to wear anything in their ears, which is where over-ear headphones like this come in handy, particularly for people who need to listen to music while they run. That openness allows runners to hear traffic sound, as being able to hear external noise and ambient sound is an important safety feature in any workout headphones. AfterShokz bone conduction wireless headphones aren't quite what many people picture when they think of an earphone because they don't go on your ears -- these headphones actually deliver sound to your ear through your cheekbones.

The AirPods Pro aren't sweat proof, but they are officially rated as being sweat-resistant.

Read our Apple AirPods Pro review.

You'll still have to lower the volume of your music to hear ambient noise and traffic. For runners, it's worth noting that there's a transparency mode that allows sound to leak in.

The whole point of mobile tap-to-pay is to make transactions faster and easier. Having to try again or sheepishly explain to an attendant why I got stuck took more time and hassle, not less. Why was I trying so hard to make this work?

I'd watch the faces who warned me that "Apple Pay wouldn't work" transform from impatience to awe when the Samsung phone I had in hand did just that, fueled by Samsung Pay's inclusion of MST technology alongside NFC. Samsung proved that pay-by-tap could work in 2015 reliably enough to leave the wallet at home (or forget it, as I did last year).

But the updates turn out to be a little more substantial than I first thought. The Elite 75t's smaller size will allow more people to get a comfortable, secure fit, and its boosted battery life and USB-C charging are significant upgrades. At first glance, the Elite 75t seems more like an evolutionary upgrade from the highly rated Elite 65t. And then there are the smaller changes, like the new charging case design with magnets inside it that make it easier to open and close and to keep the buds inside.

Notable site features: Like Warby, there's a home-trial program. You can try up to four frames at home for up to seven days. The box ships with a prepaid return label -- you just drop it off at a post office to send it back.

New York's MTA is one transit system that accepts mobile payments.

Obviously it doesn't last. We're soon back to business as usual, double-tapping henchmen in balaclavas and delivering speeches about the sanctity of life while at the same time casually massacring dozens upon dozens of random guys.

But in 2020, Samsung Pay's ace up the sleeve doesn't matter much to me. Millions of stores now support NFC, especially in the urban centers where I shop, and I don't need the MST magic that helps Samsung Pay work where Google and Apple's apps don't. To be fair, most of the places I shop these days are limited to the grocery store, Target and takeout dining during these days of lockdown.

If you don't buy your prescription eyeglasses, sunglasses and contact lenses online, you could easily be missing out on hundreds of dollars in savings. Besides being cheaper, procuring prescription glasses online from a manufacturer such as Warby Parker or one of its many colleagues in the eyeglasses industry is also much easier than going somewhere in person.

If you're being charitable, you could argue writer Greg Rucka is subverting action movie tropes in a script adapted from his own comic (co-created by artist Leandro Fernandez). The familiar plot has a big fantasy twist: the globetrotting mercenaries carry swords. Because they're frickin' immortal.

Here\u0027s why I made the switch","description":"Commentary: I used to love, love, love Samsung Pay.Additional lenses are available for $20 to $30, and Glassesusa.com sells discounted prescription lenses for them. The wind factor also makes them less suitable for biking.

Read full review of Bose Frames.

If it's really windy, the audio quality won't be great. They're available in two versions -- Alto and a smaller Rondo style -- for $200 and support Bose's AR (augmented reality) audio platform.

In my experience, that sometimes stretches out closer to three weeks. Shipping times: "Your eyeglasses are delivered around two weeks from the time we receive your order," says Zenni.

If the AirPods don't fit your ears securely for running, the Soundcore Liberty Air 2 may be a good alternative that costs much less than the AirPods Pro but has a similar noise-isolating design in a "pipe" shape. In short, as long as you're OK with a noise isolating design, the Anker Liberty Air 2 true wireless earbuds are an excellent AirPod alternative that happens to costs less than $100. They're also sweat-resistant and are excellent for making calls. These earphones sound as good, if not better than the AirPods, and they fit my ear better and more securely, making them excellent running earbuds. They're available in black or white.

That one layer of authentication is enough. (Google Pay requires you to use a secure lock screen.)

Google Pay's big advantage: Speed
With Google Pay, you don't have to swipe up on your payment card, type a second PIN or unlock the screen again with your finger. It's good to go as soon as you unlock your phone using your fingerprint or a password.

How can something with this much CGI blood spatter be so bloodless? And the action is slick and fast-paced, but you've seen it all a million times before. Are we really supposed to get excited about an invincible hero wading through yet another crowd of faceless stuntmen in tactical gear? Stabbing and pirouetting, Theron's bulletproof badass isn't really any different from gun fu masters John Wick or the stylish assassin she played in Atomic Blonde.

The trouble is, The Old Guard's twist doesn't really twist the action. The identikit evil CEO could be straight out of Venom or Bloodshot.

After many tests (and many miles run), I've formed strong opinions on which headphones are the best for running. This list of running headphones includes in-ear headphones, on-ear headphones, Bluetooth headphones, headphones with noise isolation, bone-conduction headphones, true wireless buds and many others, so we've got good options no matter what you need for from your running headphones.

The frames also come with three sizes of grippy nose pads to ensure a better fit. Roka started out making athletic glasses for runners, bikers and triathletes, and many of its prescription frames are bendable at the ends and have rubberized tracks that help you get a more secure fit. They are among the most comfortable glasses I've worn -- and they really stay on your face.

Subscribe to the Mobile newsletter, receive notifications and see related stories on CNET. I was one of the first to try it. I've followed major developments in the field since 2009, long before Samsung Pay existed. Before I explain why I made the switch, I want to make my attachment to mobile payments clear -- and why Samsung Pay was particularly compelling.

It's also slightly more comfortable to wear with a comfortable fit. Aeropex ($160) over-ear headphones, which AfterShokz describes as its "lightest, highest-quality headphones yet," were released in 2019. However, while AfterShokz continues to make small improvements to performance with each new iteration of its wireless headphones, the sound quality still can't match that of a traditional headphone.

Read our AfterShokz Aeropex first take.

From my initial testing, sound quality in this pair of headphones is definitely better than the company's previous flagship model, the  -- or the Air, as it's now called.

It hasn't let me down yet. Where I used to sling my entire purse over my shoulder for my daily commute and weekend jaunts, I now slide my phone in my pocket, grab my sunglasses and go, confident that Google Pay can smoothly handle my day-to-day needs without pissing off the people lined up behind me in 6-foot intervals. I may not shop in as many brick-and-mortar businesses as I did three months ago, but I find that in my simpler lifestyle I rely on mobile payments more than ever.

For some transit payments, you won't need to unlock the phone at all, a Google spokesperson said, though I haven't been using public transit since I made the switch. Here's one other change: Samsung Pay, which I used for nearly all five years of its existence, which I used to evangelize to family and friends and which I once wrote made me "feel like a rock star" -- is no longer my payment app of choice. It's all in the thumb. I recently abandoned it for Google Pay, and I haven't looked back.

Keep in mind that all of these services have been personally used by me or someone on CNET's staff, and we'll update this as we try more. If you're looking for a new pair or two, we've pulled together the eight best online prescription glasses vendors we've found to help you narrow down your options. I felt myself holding my breath each time I tapped, mentally crossing my fingers that I wouldn't be the one of the most hated figures on the Underground: that person blocking the gates.

Using tap-to-pay is easy. You just hold your phone over the card reader, wait for the fare gates to open and walk through. But when I used Samsung Pay on my Galaxy S20, the gates often wouldn't open on my first attempt, forcing me to try again or find an attendant while my friend or family waited on the other side of the turnstile.

(While Apple doesn't claim water-resistance for the standard AirPods, they're on the list because we've found them to handle sweat reasonably well.)

Secondly, and more importantly, the best running headphones should give you a secure and comfortable fit, whether they're over-ear headphones, bone conduction, or wireless in-ear buds. X-Men Origins: Wolverine gets plenty of flack from fans. It's been rough for this version of Ryan Reynolds' character.

Even if they don't sound quite as magical as you'd hope a $249 model would, the AirPods Pro still have top-notch audio quality, making them a great pair of truly wireless earphones for depositing great sound right into your ear canal. That's largely due to their winning design and fit, improved bass performance, effective noise cancellation (goodbye background noise) and excellent call quality. While I can't run with the standard AirPods (they don't fit my ears securely), I had no trouble running with the AirPods Pro, which have a noise isolating design with a silicone tip that sits snuggly in your ear.It has clearer overall sound and better bass definition, so long as you get a tight seal. With the occasional exception of retrieving a credit card from my wallet, I've barely reached inside my purse since mid-March when I began to work from home and shelter in place. It isn't just the coronavirus lockdown that's turned my nice purse into a glorified sunglasses stand. It's also a renewed reliance on mobile payments that sees me leaving my wallet behind more than ever before.

Layne's character provides one of the few intriguing and surprising moments in the film when Theron hands her a gun. Now that would be a great subversion.

The emotional dilemma of eternity troubles the latest recruit to the ranks, played by KiKi Layne. Here, for an intriguing moment it looks like our hero rejects the violent path, opting out of the action movie as a concept. Obviously every movie has a moment where the screenwriting software inserts a falling-out between heroes -- that'll be the "refusing the call" portion of the classic hero's journey -- but generally the reluctant recruit comes to embrace redemptive violence in the end. When Samsung Pay first arrived on the scene, it had a special something that set it apart from Apple Pay and Android Pay, Google Pay's precursor. Samsung Pay was -- and still is -- the only mobile payment platform that works with nearly any credit card reader, not just payment terminals that support NFC, the short-range communication system used by Apple Pay and Google Pay. That second technology, magnetic secure transmission, is what makes credit card swipes work, and it remains Samsung Pay's special sauce.

Plus, you want a Bluetooth device with great battery life, a device that looks good, a device that has a good fit and sounds great when you listen to music. One must-have is a good set of headphones for all those videoconferences and conference calls -- and that doesn't always mean the same old headphones you use for listening to music. What does that mean exactly? id="article-body" class="row" section="article-body">

Working from home during the coronavirus pandemic? Many devices are OK at communications, but the best Bluetooth headphones for calls are able to reduce ambient sounds around you even in noisy environments, which lets people hear your voice and not all that extra chatter and background noise, whether it's traffic noise, wind or the kids watching the TV in the next room.

The grizzled leader goes against her own rules for one last job.

Back in March, I dragged my 2005 Lemond Tourmalet bike out of the garage, put on four layers of warm clothing and went for a ride. I wrecked the Tourmalet earlier in June, but have since replaced it with a used 2012 Specialized Roubaix Pro, and have also borrowed a friend's old Santa Cruz Nomad for excursions on the trail. Since then, I've been cycling every other day -- and I've put on my road bike during the past two months than I did over the last five years. What's also good about them is that since there's nothing in your ear, you can hear traffic sound and have a conversation while wearing them. They also work well for making calls.

While the arms are slightly bulky, the sunglasses don't feel heavy on your head and are comfortable to wear. Bose's Frames audio sunglasses are surprisingly good wireless running headphones, with decent sound quality from their embedded micro speakers.

Which sounds awesome. Brief flashbacks and passing mentions hint at a history of witches in iron coffins and a pair of rival crusaders who keep killing each other until they fall in love. I know, I know, it's dumb B-movie entertainment. But the real crime is, this is one of those flicks where the backstory is waaaay more interesting than what's on screen.

If the fingerprint scan doesn't work immediately, or you typed the wrong pin, you have to bring the phone back to you for a do-over before extending it over the machine again.

Then you have to type a PIN or authenticate with your fingerprint or iris scan (in older Galaxy models) to "wake up" Samsung Pay's software. The knitted fabric cable, which is water resistant, is lightweight and does not tangle. They have a built-in microphone, so you can jump onto a call when needed. They're comfortable to wear, easy to control with one hand and loud enough to hear -- even in very windy conditions. Otherwise, I highly recommend the Adidas FWD-01.

When the ride is over, or I've pulled off the road to take a photo, it's dead simple to release; just pull the mount's locking mechanism upward and twist. But when I end my ride, I switch over to my preferred Catalyst case.

The Quadlock phone case is hefty -- there's a raised bump on the back that fits onto the mount -- and I'd trust it to ably protect the phone in a crash. The Quadlock mount sits atop the bike stem, and I feel quite confident in its capacity to keep my phone safe and secure, even when traversing bumpy terrain.

Samsung Pay still has a lot of great side features that range from reward points to in-app purchases, and you might even find that the MST technology helps Samsung Pay work at more stores where you live. Get in, pay as seamlessly as possible, get out. My needs, however, are pretty simple.

Do they sound fantastic? No, but they sound pretty good. An excellent value at less than $50, they may not fit everybody's ears equally well (they're slightly bulky so they may not be a comfortable fit for those with smaller ears). What's most impressive about the EarFun Free is the features: Bluetooth 5.0, both USB-C and wireless charging and fully waterproof (IPX7), according to their specs. They're also pretty solid for making calls. However, they're relatively lightweight and they fit my ears securely enough to run with them.

They don't have the clarity of higher-end true wireless earbuds that cost $150 or more, but they do have plump bass and enough detail to avoid sounding dull.

Notable site features: There's a Frame Fit "mirror" feature that allows you to upload a photo and see the frames on your face, as well as new "virtual" try-on feature (powered by Ditto) that allows you to see the glasses on your face as you move around using your computer's webcam or your phone's camera. This is similar to the virtual try-on feature that Warby Parker offers. This pair of around-the-neck headphones does have some design and performance upgrades, but the AfterShokz Trekz Air is still good for a bone-conduction headphone (again, beware that the sound doesn't measure up to that of a traditional headphone).

Read our AfterShokz Trekz Air review.

If you don't want to shell out $160 for AfterShokz's new Aeropex bone-conduction wireless headphone, the Trekz Air -- or Air, as it's now called -- retails for about $60 less.

Notable site features: A virtual "mirror" feature lets you upload your photo to the site and see what a pair of eyeglasses looks like on your face shape to help you find the perfect pair of optical frames.
