The text reflects on the importance of the religious structures ruins as powerful elements in the interpretation and construction of the local memories of the space where they are inserted. The chapel of Senhor Jesus D'Além, dating from the 19th century, located in the municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia, in Portugal, is the case study chosen. In ruins and in a state of degradation, many are the historical elements that make possible the interpretation of city quotidians during its period of operation. Today, they keep pieces of memories in their spaces, being an example of the individual’s carelessness.
