The present work proposes to present in its first sections the question about the definition of religion and the implications thereof for the scientific study in this area. For this, we use works that directly address the theme, as well as those who make their criticism. In its last section, it presents some difficulties for the formulation of this definition by dialogue with alternative proposals, aspects of linguistic precision and validation criteria, concluding with considerations and suggestions on these challenges from the own theoretical course.
