The main aim of this text is, in addition to the attempt to define what is meant by pilgrimage, the presentation of systematization of different types of historic or subsisting pilgrimages, each one of which can cover more than one modality. Thus, it will be possible to approach and characterize more comprehensively the diversity of this practice. Based on a set of selected criteria, we try to approach this theme, simplifying the understanding of the very complex reality that the phenomenon of pilgrimage currently means.
