Afro-brazilian religious materiality in the street carnival of São Paulo

This article examines Afro-Brazilian religions through their empirical and material dimensions – such as instruments, music, dance, rituals, and other religious artifacts – mobilized during the street carnival of São Paulo. Focusing on the performance of the Bloco Afro É Di Santo, located in the Piraporinha neighborhood in the city’s southern region, the study identifies how Afro-Brazilian religious materiality, expressed through bodily, musical, and instrumental practices, shapes the religious experiences of both the group’s members and carnival participants. The analysis unfolds in three stages: (1) exploring carnival as an expression of Afro-Brazilian religions, with a focus on the history of São Paulo’s Black carnival; (2) investigating the origins of Afro-Brazilian blocos and their aesthetic and musical expressions; and (3) analyzing the history and performance of Bloco Afro É Di Santo, emphasizing the role of religion in its daily practices and public performances. Employing Material Religion as a methodological framework within the Science of Religion, the article seeks to expand the field’s engagement with materiality, particularly through the intersection of Afro-Brazilian religions and street carnival.
