AMONG APPLAUSE AND ACCUSATIONS: THE GAUCHO LAWYERS' ORGANIZATIONS AND THE INSTALLATION OF THE CIVIL-MILITARY DICTATORSHIP (1964-1966)

Abstract

This paper seeks to present the existing debates in the Council of the Rio Grande do Sul section of the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB/RS) and the Institute of Lawyers of Rio Grande do Sul (IARGS) during the first years of the civil-military dictatorship. In the face of the changes that occurred soon after the coup of 1964, the lawyers' associations presented ambivalent positions: in the initial years of the dictatorship, the organizations in their meetings ranged from moments of support for the new regime to moments of opposition. In the same way, based on the analysis of the minutes of the entities, the complexity of the installation of the dictatorship is emphasized.
