Abstract

The article, written in an essay format, problematizes the possibilities and limits of writing history from the sertões, taking as its starting point the social dimension of the production of scientific knowledge, in particular, regarding the powerplays that characterize the national and international institutional environments. In addition, the study aims to reflect on the impact of the exclusively external gaze on the frontier regions, as it is the case, in general, of the sertões, especially with regard to the construction of totalizing memories and identities. Finally, a case study is presented, from the sertões of Rio Grande do Norte (Brazil), being the result of a broader research, developed in the latest years about this northeastern region.
