The present article discusses relevant economic and political characteristics derived from the new morphology of the great urban agglomerate that constitutes São Paulo, whose actual configuration has obtained expression since the last quarter of the past century. The first section recovers some historical conditions related to recessive adjustment politics of the years 1980-90 and their implications in Brazil and São Paulo metropolitan region. Then, we identify the principal metropolitan dynamics associated to globalization and its manifestations in São Paulo. Finally, in section 3 we proceed to a closer analysis of the new determinations producing effects in São Paulo metropolitan region, strengthening its centrality, and express some general conclusions aimed to formulate a regionally balanced development policy in Brazil.
