Abstract

This article analyzes methodologies to compute housing deficits and reviews recenttrends in Brazil. The first section discusses the three main methodologies employed to computehousing deficit and compares different methodological concepts and the Brazilian results for2009. The second section brings the estimates for deficit changes from 2001 to 2009 and thedistributions according to regions and income levels. We conclude that the unique visions of thethree methodologies complement each other because they cover different populations thatlack housing and either demand housing improvements or new homes altogether.
