Inflationary pressures on the supply side: an analysis of the challenges of the Brazilian economy in the period of 2019-2021

Brazil faces a set of problematic issues especially concerning the economic and social segments. Inflationary pressures combined with deterioration in the labor market have fuelled poverty, food insecurity and social vulnerability. Given this situation, it is essential that the monetary authority, together with other public institutions, carries out an appropriate study on the causes of inflation, which particularly was heavily impacted by supply factors. In addition to the impacts of the exchange rate devaluation and the increase in international commodity prices, other factors such as the high degree of market concentration and the potential exercise of market power in some segments are greatly affecting the population's cost of living, as is the case for the soy oil. It is only possible to implement a set of measures to foster the country's long-term economic and social development after an appropriate macro and microeconomic study is performed.
