O texto de Pierucci tem por objetivo seguir incansavelmente a trajetória da construção do conceito Desencantamento do Mundo em Weber. Para tanto, o autor realiza uma vasta e minuciosa busca ao longo de toda a bibliografia de Max Weber, de maneira cronológica, para saber como e quando começou a ser cunhado o conceito, que, para Pierucci, é a produção intelectual weberiana mais importante para o entendimento da modernidade. Ao longo da obra, ele vai apresentando detalhadamente como surgiram as motivações de realizar a empreitada até o resultado final, que, para sua surpresa, abriu a porta para uma nova possível investigação, qual seja, o novo encantamento do mundo.
