O presente artigo esta dividido em dois momentos: no primeiro apresentarei três fases significativas na trajetória de Dom Helder Camara até sua chegada a Recife. O segundo momento mostrará como foi a sua participação no mais importante acontecimento da Igreja católica no século XX, o Concílio Vaticano II, realizado em Roma no início da década de 1960. A idealização e início do Concílio Vaticano II, em 1962, aconteceu no papado de João XXIII, morto em 1963. A continuidade do Concílio e o encerramento se deu com o Papa Paulo VI em 1965. Poderemos perceber a importância de Dom Helder Camara nos bastidores do Concílio, onde o seu papel aglutinador entre os religiosos da América Latina e do Terceiro Mundo foi muito importante para se construir bispos uma igreja propositiva e servidora, voltada para os pobres e excluídos. A sua ação política e pastoral anterior, durante e posterior ao Concílio estimulou reflexões teológicas e possibilitou a produção de uma teologia da libertação e a construção de uma nova igreja.Downloads
