The Heroic Journey of Frodo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings in Light of Christianity

Abstract

This study examines Frodo Baggins' journey in The Lord of the Rings in light of Joseph Campbell's monomyth theory and the Christian influence on J. R. R. Tolkien's work. Through analysis of the stages of the hero's journey, narrative elements are identified that align with both the mythological structure and passages from the Christian tradition. Frodo emerges as a hero who carries a burden similar to sin to face temptations and sacrifices that echo the journey of Jesus Christ. This study seeks to demonstrate how Tolkien harmonizes mythology and spirituality, making his work timeless and relevant both for literary study and for philosophical and theological reflection.
