A PALAVRA “RETÓRICA” NO STF: ANÁLISE DO ETHOS E DA VOCALIDADE EM DECISÕES MONOCRÁTICAS

This study analyzes the use of the word "rhetoric" in monocratic decisions of the Brazilian Supreme Federal Court (STF), considering it as a discursive formula that contributes to the construction of the ethos of the justices in a mediated legal-political context. The research problem consists of identifying how the ethos of the justices is produced through the use of formulaic expressions containing the term "rhetoric." The objective is to analyze how such formulas build discursive credibility and legitimize decisions in the eyes of public opinion. The methodology adopted is qualitative, descriptive-interpretative, based on Discourse Analysis and Content Analysis, using a corpus composed of decisions published between 2012 and 2021. The results reveal four recurring meanings attributed to the term—technical rationality, practical rationality, moral authority, and benevolence—showing its use as a mechanism for disqualifying the other, reinforcing the dominant discourse, and projecting a performative institutional ethos. It is concluded that the discursive formulas that mobilize "rhetoric" function as strategies of persuasion and ideological positioning, contributing to the maintenance of the symbolic authority of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) and to the understanding of the relationships between language, power, and mediatization in contemporary legal discourse.
