Resumo

Basic Education teachers often rely on the textbook as the exclusive source of reading selections. It is important for Teacher Education Programs to build their independence from such materials. In this paper, we analyse the involvement of teachers in the selection of a reading text and its effects on classroom interaction. In one of the classes analysed, there is no selection by the teacher, who uses the “generic material” found in the textbook. In the other, the teacher uses “individualised material”, by making her own choices. We show that the teacher’s involvement in text selection, determine remarkable differences in the quality of classroom interaction.
