Writing of Delirium

the Containing Function in “A Breath of Life” By Clarice Lispector

Abstract

Between literature and psychoanalysis, this review proposes a listening to the writing of A Breath of Life, by Clarice Lispector, as a limit-experience of language. Published posthumously but written alongside The Hour of the Star, the book unfolds as a weaving between narrator and character, in a specular play that blurs the boundaries between life and fiction, subject and creation. From a psychoanalytic perspective, it is argued that Lispector’s text enacts a writing of delirium, functioning as a container for psychic experiences of disorganization, fragmentation, and pain. The containing function, here rethought beyond the traditional clinical setting, is transposed into the literary field as an ethical and aesthetic gesture that welcomes the formless, the unspeakable, and the excessive. Writing thus becomes a way of not disappearing. Through this reading, an approximation is proposed between processes of creation and psychic elaboration, highlighting the potency of literature as a space for listening to and transmitting primitive mental states.
