Dossier: Aesthetic Perspectives between Brazil and Kenya

From the V Symposium on Aesthetics: Art outside the Axis: Production and Thought (PUC – SP/2018), we set out to look elsewhere for artistic productions that, by their very nature, conflict with the dictates of a more market-oriented production, or productions oriented by the so-called “circle of the arts”. Market criticism is not mere economic criticism, but aesthetic, and therefore ethical. In this way, we intend, in continuity to the event, to give voice to aesthetic forms that refer to other possible life forms, expression of expectation and utopian desires that live and survive between Brazil and African culture, especially Kenya. To this end, we have launched, for the next issue of the Journal Paralaxe, a dossier about Afro-Brazilian and African artistic productions, with the special participation of Kenyan authors and artists.

We are interested in this dossier to expose the Brazilian and African perceptions about themselves, about their respective cultures, histories, that is, about the connections between the fields of science, philosophy, art and religion that erect the reality around them. Thus, we seek a self-explanation of identities, facing the aesthetic interweaving of the different ways of being and inhabiting the world, which are accommodated in the conformation of these peoples in contemporary times. It is not intended a mere return to the origins, nor a homogenization of perspectives, but, above all, a reflection that presents the Brazilian and African ethnic cultural specificities resistant to the physical and symbolic violence imposed from the contact with the European. It is therefore a question of elucidating these perspectives, which, while witnessing horror and injury, recognize this body as a place of pleasure; and enables them to sculpt their own image by careful examination of themselves.
